Spirit-Quest is a very private journey deep inside which leads to phenomenal healing and growth. Old prejudices, beliefs about self and negativity are challenged and exercised in a non-threatening way. Little by little over the course of thirty weeks the real self blooms. Confidence grows and the world is seen through calmer, more focused eyes.

I have been on many journeys. This one has had and is having the most profound results, perhaps because of the concentrated time spent over a long period. Seeds are sown and given room to sprout and grow.

I am calmer, more focused and no longer fearful of using my healing talents.

Roses: One of the tools I like best and which I have had the opportunity to use many, many times is “blowing up roses.” So many experiences, both good and bad, can be handled with this tool. When some person or some situation is difficult, it is so easy to put them or it into a rose and blow it up. It makes me smile every time.

One thing I have discovered in attempting to use this tool with truly negative or harmful things. Not wishing to blow up evil and disperse it throughout the world, I tried putting it down a grounding cord. I created a grounding cord right in front of me, dropped the situation down the grounding cord and blew it up deep inside the earth. I created a neutral grounding cord in front of me so I would not have to use my own grounding cord. I did not want the evil anywhere near me.

Spirit Guides: I have been talking with my Spirit Guide for many years. It is not necessary for me to use a rose. I simply ask a question and receive an answer. I also ask for things that I want and feel that the Spirit Guide will either help make it happen or help me to see why I really don’t want it. I also find that I am able to talk with or see people who have died. This is a fairly new phenomenon and one with which I am not altogether comfortable. Because this is helpful to people who are grieving it is an important “talent” for me to cultivate. This course has helped with my comfort level.

Finally, I wish to thank you for a wonderful course.

Friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate the love of ________ and ______, as they make their pledges of marriage before God and before this company. Jesus Christ was once asked, “What is the greatest Law that mankind must follow?” And he answered them by saying that we must love God with all our hearts, and love our neighbors as our self.

I think that when he said these words, he touched upon something we all feel very deeply in our hearts, and that is that love is the greatest gift we can offer one another, and that is what makes marriage so very special, and such a cause of joy and celebration for all of us who have come here today to share in this event.

It is my personal prayer and hope that those of you who have already taken the vows of marriage will witness the love of these two people, and as you hear them share their vows, perhaps it will strengthen for you the memory of your happy day, and remind you of the meaning of the vows you yourselves once took. Perhaps it will even strengthen just a little bit the bonds of love that have been growing between you. If any of this should happen, it would certainly be the greatest gift that ______ and ______ could offer all of us on their wedding day.

Marriage is an act of faith and ever-deepening commitment, as well as a loving union between a man and a woman. It has been described as the best and the most important relationship that two people can share, the creation of a single growing energy of spiritual life. Marriage can be a lifelong unfolding of loving kindness, backed by the will to make it last. There is no limit to the knowing of another’s soul, and when you learn to love one person, then you grow in love for all of humanity.

Note: If you wish, we can substitute the wedding ceremony which appears in the Traditional Book of Common Prayer. The entire ceremony can be found in the paperback book, You and Your Wedding by Winnifred Gray, and in the Book of Common Prayer itself.

Rose vow

Universal Life Church Wedding Ceremonies
NOTE: The Groom will need to have a rose and the Bride will need a vase with water in it. Before the ceremony, the vase and rose should be placed in an easily accessible spot generally behind a lectern, for example. The best man, the Maid of Honor, or the Minister should get the rose and the vase just prior to this part of the service.

Minister: This is a day steeped in tradition, a time when we are surrounded by symbols: something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Today, (Bride’s Name) and (Groom’s Name) begin a new tradition, a custom which now becomes uniquely their own.

Groom: (Bride Name) I give you this rose. Because it grew from a tiny seed, becoming stronger and larger until it burst into flower, it symbolizes the way my love for you has grown. (Groom gives Bride the rose.) Each year on our wedding anniversary, I will give you another rose. In so doing, I’ll remember this day and renew the vows we’ve made.

Bride: (Groom’s name), I give to you this vase of water. (Groom takes and holds it.) Because water is the one element without which we would perish, it symbolizes the importance of your love in my life. Each year on our anniversary, I will refill this vase, offering it to you as a symbol of my ever renewing love. (Bride puts the rose in the vase and they hold the vase together.)

Groom: Without water, the rose would die.

Bride: Without the rose, the vase of water would not be beautiful.

Groom: My gift is enhanced by yours, just as my life is enhanced by ours.

Bride: My gift is lovely because of yours, just as my life is better because of you. ( They hand the rose and vase to the Minister.)

Minister: On each anniversary, as you give and receive the rose and the water, remember with joy this day when you pledged your love and your lives to each other. May this be only the first of many cherished traditions in a home filled with happiness.

Doctor of Spiritual Awareness Final Essay
by Justin Oles

Having already completed most of the spirituality courses offered by the Seminary, to include the Master of Spirituality course, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this course. After all what would the change from “master” to “doctor” actually entail. I think it entails mostly a more profound, indirect and more open and thought provoking look at the topic. It also entails more breadth and depth to the topic. The Doctorate course covers everything from healing and energy use and gathering to spirits, haunting and basic exorcism. Major tenets of the course listed below. Firstly, to never do any magical act; whether it be healing, scrying, or helping someone without their permission. Secondly, advice against the rookie mistake of using your own energy for the purpose of magic, with examples and practicals on how to gather energy from other sources and use it properly. In addition that our thoughts are what controls things on this plane of existence as well as on the others. Our thoughts and will are what creates magic, not the fanciful movements of our hands or wands. Lastly, to be careful with dealing with spirits, while explaining the basic fact that no spirit that will contact you is outside your power to deal with, while some can be tricky and can often put up a fight that requires brains and not brawn to beat.

One of the unfortunate facts about this course is that it presents some ideas that will make no sense if you haven’t taken other spirituality courses. This is not really an issue since it is listed as a doctorate level course and the implications therefore would be that you should take the masters level courses first. One complaint along those lines is that while the ascended masters are spoken of in passing throughout the course an explanation of whom and what they are was saved for the final lesson. While I am sure the author has a valid reason for this it would make more sense to me logically to have an explanation of the terminology before the term is use for the first time, or at a minimum a brief explanation included with the first use of the term. Once again, having taken many different courses from the seminary previously I had an understanding of the meaning of almost all terms, someone who has less experience or training may find it difficult to become fully engrossed in and truly understand the lessons based on this fact alone.

One good thing about the course was the breadth and depth. While this is a doctorate level course and I was expected it to drill down more specifically as such it ended up being a good overall view of spirituality with the thought processes of an upper level course but with the specificity and breadth of a primer course. This worked simply because it was able to make you curious enough to do more research on your own. The only drawback of this being the author has to give over some control of where that curiosity brings you rather than control the entire journey through the course.

I am thrilled that I have finally been able to enroll in ULC’s Doctor of Religious Humanities course. I ordered it last night and eagerly await the material so I may get started. It’s been over a year and a half since becoming Ordained and I feel Blessed at finally being able to financially afford this (and two more courses later!!) as one of my father’s last wishes. I was elated that he had made a small fund available to me for the sole purpose of enrolling in ULC courses. Even though he was a devout, ordained Evangelical Pastor, I was honored to get his verbal blessing for this only days before he passed. It was an awesome gift that we were able to share our individual beliefs with each other without any condemnation or “right way” speeches he was so famous for in the past. Our communing in this manner is the best, and most honored, gift I have ever received from him or my parents. I even look past it being so late in his Life and will cherish this for the remainder of mine.

Anyway, I suppose I digress due to my light heart and fulfilling experience!

I recently found the ULC message boards and have spent hours reading the posts and that way getting to know some of our Membership. I knew this segment of communication was there, I simply neglected getting to involved until I could contribute more and was able to enroll in some sort of course within the ULC educational channels. I have benefited greatly from the course samples you have faithfully sent me and truly appreciate that opportunity to participate.

I believe I informed you awhile back that it was Dr. Hensley’s little church on 3rd Street in Modesto that turned my life around some 30 years ago. I plan on writing a short introduction/bio including this little tid-bit for the Membership soon. I do truly enjoy the message boards and find it a wonderful means for members to fully explore any given topic. The MSN group my wife and I formed was great when everyone got together on PalTalk, but the message boards always seemed to be where we got into the meat and potatoes of any issue as we were able to respond at will.

Attached is a little piece of artwork I was inspired to draw up last night and I would like to offer it to the ULC Membership as a customary thing I do. Naturally it is offered copyright permissions granted and free for all ULC members to use, download or copy. While Wanda and I lived on Maui I spent a great deal of time with local artists, shaman and healers. There is a simplistic beauty in Polynesian art and I genuinely put my mind and heart into learning the make up of this medium.

The picture for ULC is representative of the bounty of the Earth (aina) the blessings of the sky and sun (ka) and the many wonders of the sea (kai) and how important our belief in Spirit (mana/manau ke nui) is towards living a fulfilled and joyous Life. The wind bars send us towards a blessed future and the enclosure line represents our community of good folks which “Do only that which is right“.

I didn’t want to just post it without running it by someone on staff first and to be honest I’m a bit “new fangled thang challenged” when it comes to more than copy and paste! So if you wouldn’t mind please offer this up to the Membership on my behalf (My Thanks in advance) …..ORRRRR……you could get Murph or someone that knows what’s going on to help me do it the first time (I am a quick study and I usually only need one or two lessons on such things. And of course, if you feel its best I don’t poet it at all, I completely understand and respect ULC’s regulations (if there are some) on these type requests.

Blessings of Peace and may your Path be filled with Light,

Dave “Rev. One good thing about a secular ceremony is that you don’t have to fit in with any regulations -“ most ceremonies are based around asking for a god’s blessing, adapting church ceremonies to fit in with a couple’s wishes. Secular ceremonies are solely about the couple’s commitment to each other.

There are several types of secularist ceremonies. Humanist celebrants offer wedding ceremonies that concentrate on the power of the human spirit and do not invoke or refer to any type of religion, god or deity. Humanist celebrants in America are certified by a division of the American Humanist Association and will generally talk with couples to help them decide what they want their ceremony to be like.

Atheist ceremonies take a stand against religion, acknowledging that the couple come together for their shared love and do not ask the authority of any god to bless their union. Couples may have friends read passages of favorite texts to demonstrate the couple’s feelings for each other.

Gay wedding vows for secular gay ceremonies can take any form a couple wishes, although it is generally a good idea to look at existing vows for inspiration. A couple may wish to include a favorite love poem or inspirational writing in their vows, as well as a list of promises to their spouse.

I believe that the teaching about loving others as you would want to be loved is one of the most important lessons taught.

I think that the lessons about greed talk so much about the trouble the world is having today. I know that The times that we are living in now are what Jesus was talking about and I do believe that being prepared means spiritually. I think that everyone should find and get to know God and be prepared for everything has has prepared for us.

I think the story of Jesus being captured and betrayed teaches us that real trust is very hard to come by. I enjoyed this whole book I think that it taught a lot about today’s life.

Note: readings and vows to be provided by the couple being married.

Opening Words
The stream had flowed through the center of the forest for as long as anyone could remember.

It began as a cold, clear fountain in a fractured hillside, then tumbled down over mossy stones and last year?s autumn leaves. At the foot of the hill the stream took a course running southeast through tall stands of beeches, maples, and oaks, and by the time it left the forest five miles later it carried a river’s ambitions.

But in the center of the forest it was a watery dream, about ten feet wide and ten inches deep. Fallen logs made bridges for chipmunks, foxes, and children looking for secrets. Occasional shafts of sunlight revealed freshwater muscles in the silt, crayfish picking over pebbles, water beetles dancing on the surface, and young trout darting among roots, branches, and softly bubbling falls.

The stream was full of life, and full of lessons for those who knew how to see them. And regarding it silently on the bank stood the master and the student.

The master and the student had arrived at the stream after walking the forest path for nearly two hours. Every step of the way, the student spoke anxiously of the impending choices that filled his mind with confusion. Should he travel? If so, where? Should he continue his studies? If so, in what field of knowledge? Should he learn a new trade, or perhaps join the family business? Should he save his money, or spend freely and enjoy life to its fullest? And on, and on, and on. And every step of the way the master only listened.

When they reached the stream the student fell silent. They stood side by side, watching the water. Then, pointing to a fallen twig, the master asked, “If you throw that stick into the stream, where will it go?” The student answered, ?It will go downstream, of course.? But the master shook his head. ?No,? he said, ?I want you to tell me exactly where it will go.?
The student crouched down on the bank and observed the water carefully. He noted the paths of leaves, the surge of bubbles, and the sway and drift of weeds growing on the bottom, until he was sure. “Well,” he said, “If I throw the stick to land at that spot there, it will follow the current between those two rocks, rush over that fall, then swirl in that eddy for a moment, then pass under this branch, and then move off under that fallen log over there.” The student smiled, supremely confident.

“All right,” the master said. “Throw the stick.”
And the student did. And it traveled on a course entirely different from the one he had predicted.
They watched the stick drift out of sight. The student shuffled his feet and looked at the ground, but finally met the master?s eyes. ?The important thing,? said the master,? is to throw the stick!?

We are here today because ________ and _______ have decided to throw the stick.

In a world of endless choices, unpredictable outcomes, and no guarantees, they are doing the finest thing two people can do: making a commitment before friends and family to devote their lives to each other.

We call this a wedding. It comes from an old Germanic word meaning “a pledge.” And this is worth remembering as we consider what this day is all about. We make few pledges in our modern lives. But today we celebrate with ________ and ______ as they make theirs: a pledge to and for each other, not as individuals, but as two that are choosing to become one.

First reading: a poem or other literary excerpt that addresses the nature of love.

Segue 1
Most would agree that it is love that keeps people together when they?re confronted with that immense sky, with those infinite distances that separate even the closest of men and women. But what kind of love?

Poets, priests and philosophers, and no small number of cabbies, barbers and bartenders have debated this question. We speak of spiritual love, passionate love, love eternal… but the phrase that may capture the reality of this emotion best is ?stirring the oatmeal? love. When you?re willing to stand in your bathrobe on a cold kitchen floor at 5:00 AM, and stir the oatmeal so your spouse can have a little more sleep?and not even think twice about why you?re doing it?then you have a love that can last a lifetime. As Carl Jung once wrote, feeling is a matter of the small.

Such simple, pragmatic experiences are the best places for love to take root. In such ground, love blossoms over time, becoming deeper, more beautiful, and more profound.

Second reading: a poem or other literary excerpt that addresses the depth and power of the love between the two being married.

Segue 2
Love so deep, intimacy so profound, cannot help but suggest transcendence, a shifting of human experience into the realm of the spiritual. This is what makes marriage a unique milestone in any relationship. _________ and _________ have been together for eight years. They seem as close as any two people can be. Yet they felt the need for something more: a rite of passage.

We define marriage as a sacrament, something that is itself defined as ‘a rite ordained as an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.’ An outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. That is why we are here: to witness this visible sign. These words, these actions?they are the manifestation of that inward grace. In this way, a marriage is like a mirror. It lets us look into depths that cannot be seen directly, and reflects the spirit of the two being joined as one.

Third reading: a poem or other literary excerpt that addresses the struggle and challenge of marriage, which can lead to a more spiritual and joyful life.

Vows intro
________________ and ________________ are here to marry each other. No one else?s will can create such a union. It is their words, their intentions, their vision, that must define and shape this marriage. So I call upon them now to state their promise before this group: the pledges that will bind them together.

Vows and exchange of rings (vows to be provided by the couple being married.)

Segue 3
_______ and _____ have come a long way. From (insert reference to how the couple met), to declaring their devotion to each other today. Theirs is a continuing journey. It will not always be easy. They will face challenges, trials, and hardships, as we all do.

But their union is strong and vital. Their task now is to find joy in seeing each other constantly blossoming, to find exhilaration in change and purpose in the new roads traveled, no matter what direction is taken. They are explorers, these two. And the strength of their marriage is a strength that celebrates every minute of life, as well as the living mystery of their love.

Fourth reading: a poem or other literary excerpt that expresses the celebration of a new union, a merging of two into one.

Closing
This marriage is complete. Where there were two, there is now one.

Closing words are often the hardest. One never knows where one will find them. To begin, here?s a wedding toast from Africa…

?Through others, we are someone. Through this marriage, we broaden our family circle, we remember our heritage and recall those who gave us life. We call upon our ancestors, the foundations of our families, immortalized in our thoughts. We call upon our elders, whose wisdom we seek in all endeavors. Our friends whom we are blessed to have in our lives. Our parents who guided us along the road to adulthood. We call upon those who have passed over and could not be here today. And we call upon the bride and groom, that they may always find prosperity in love and devotion. We ask that children bless this couple, because children give glory to a home.

Therefore we cast a libation to the North, to the South, to the East and to the West. And we wish everyone to leave more blessed than when they came. Amen.

To finish, a simple toast from Italy. Evviva gli sposi, hurray for the newlyweds!

Mum , dad and brother are making their way up to the hotel to get ready 2 hours before kickoff , when all of a sudden smoke starts pouring into the interior of the car . Dad has respiratory probs anyway , and he’s starting to panic , so they screech to a halt on the hard shoulder of the A120 , with Mother screeching ‘ GET OUT OF THE CAR !! GET OUT OF THE CAR !! ‘ and brother trying to put out the fire by throwing the dregs of a small bottle of Evian over the center console, but to no avail . Call the Fire Brigade, and at this point Mother remembers the ludicrously expensive Jacques Vert mother of the bride outfit about to smolder to nothing in the boot . So, she wallops brother over the head , screeches ‘GET BACK TO THE CAR ! GET BACK TO THE CAR !! ‘ and gets him to retrieve said outfit . Fire Brigade duly turn up and do the honors , and shut the road to be on the safe side .

I in the meantime am at the hotel , when I get a raging phone call from hubby to be because he’s stuck in traffic because ‘some stupid person’s car’s on fire ‘ …….
