Lesson 16 – Women in Buddhism

Questions

Exercise:

1.      There are many possible reasons people site as to why Buddha hesitated in allowing Mahapajapati to join the sangha. Can you think what any of them might be? I think Buddha was hesitant because he didn't want the monks to become distracted.  Because of the cultural biases of the time, the monks would be worrying about this world instead of concentrating on the enlightenment.

2.      Does the Thai sangha benefit by keeping women out? Why or why not? No, I don't think it is a benefit.  The women might have a perspective that would help them to become enlightened quicker.

3.      What do you think the Buddha would say today if he were here to give advice to monks and nuns? If Buddha was here today, he would say that it doesn't matter if you are a women or a man, your gender is irrelevant.  Monks and nuns are the same; karma doesn't care if you are a women or man. Enlightenment comes to those who are worth it.
